Eastern Macedonia and Thrace – A melting pot of history and cultures
The Region of East Macedonia and Thrace occupies the northeastern part of Greece. It is bounded on the east by Turkey, on the north by Bulgaria, on the west by the Region of Central Macedonia, on the southwest by the Aegean Sea, and on the southeast by the Thracian Sea.
Here, you will find the imposing mountain area of Rodopi, the Rivers Evros and Nestos, and many lakes and lagoons like Vistonida. The most populated urban centers are Komotini, the Region’s administrative seat, two big port towns, Alexandroupolis and Kavala, and three other towns, Xanthi, Drama, and Orestiada. This region includes the islands of Thasos and Samothrace, both of which have a long history that extends thousands of years.
