Serifos Island
Serifos is located in the archipelago of the Western Cyclades, between the islands of Kythnos and Sifnos, just a few hours from the port of Piraeus.
Famed for its sugar-cubed houses, incredible number of pristine beaches and steadfast traditions, Serifos is one of the hidden gems of the Cyclades islands.
In Greek mythology, it is said that Serifos is where Perseus grew up, bringing back Medusa’s head to save his mother from the unwanted romantic attentions of Polydectes, and where the Cyclopes were said to live.
The capital of Serifos is the captivating Chora, built amphitheatrically on a hill; it constitutes an authentic defensive settlement of the middle-ages. It is considered among the most graphic Cycladic areas with white windmills and paved alleys. The Venetian Castle is located at the highest point of Chora and dates back to the 15th century.
Another excellent plan is to stroll Livadi, the bustling harbor town. Livadi has a lively yet laid-back vibe, ideal for spending an evening out and exploring around.
The Serifos Mining Museum in Megalo Livadi is the perfect place to learn about the island’s mining history and the workers’ strike of 1916, which had a major impact on labor rights in Greece.
Serifos has over 70 beaches, and many small and large bays, some with sand and others with pebbles.
Psili Ammos is the most famous beach on Serifos with fine sand, natural shade, shallow waters and two tavernas.
There are plenty of alternatives, some with coarse sand (Agios Sostis, Vagia and Kalo Ambeli are among my favorites) and others with pebbles or a combination of sand and stones (Agios Yannis, Ganema, Sikamia, Lia).
Whilst there are a few must-see sights such as the old mines, the monastery of Taxiarches and the church of Agios Sostis, the island is not geared towards tourists which makes it the perfect place for nature lovers and explorers of untouched beauty.
The entire island is full of narrow and short hiking paths that wait for aspiring travelers to enjoy them. Many of these paths, running on the perimeter of Serifos Island, lead to many magical little bays and beautiful retreats for lovers of adventure or those who wish to explore the island inch by inch.
