Serifos Island
Serifos is located in the Western Cyclades archipelago, between the islands of Kythnos and Sifnos, just a few hours' drive from the port of Piraeus.
Famous for its sugar-cube-like houses, an incredible number of pristine beaches, and enduring traditions, Serifos is one of the hidden gems of the Cyclades.
Greek mythology says that it was on Serifos that Perseus, who brought the head of Medusa to save his mother from the unwanted advances of Polydectes, was raised. The Cyclopes are also said to have lived there.
The capital of Serifos is the charming Chora, built amphitheater-like on a hill. It is an authentic medieval defensive settlement. It is considered one of the most picturesque places in the Cyclades, with its white windmills and cobbled alleys. The Venetian castle, located on the highest point of Chora, dates back to the 15th century.
Another great option is a stroll through Livadi, a bustling port town. Livadi has a lively yet relaxed atmosphere, perfect for evening strolls and exploring the surrounding area.
The Serifos Mining Museum in Megalo Livadi is the perfect place to learn about the island's mining history and the 1916 workers' strike, which had a significant impact on labor rights in Greece.
Seriphos has over 70 beaches and numerous small and large coves, both sandy and pebbly.
Psili Ammos is the most famous beach in Serifos, with fine sand, natural shade, shallow waters, and two tavernas. There are many alternatives: some with coarse sand (Agios Sostis, Vagia, and Kalo Ambeli are among my favorites), others with pebbles or a combination of sand and rocks (Agios Yiannis, Ganema, Sykamia, Lia).
While the island has several must-see attractions, such as the old mines, the Taxiarches Monastery, and the Church of Agios Sostis, the island is not tourist-oriented, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers and explorers of unspoiled beauty.
There are numerous narrow and short hiking trails throughout the island, awaiting novice hikers. Many of these trails, which run along the perimeter of Serifos, lead to a multitude of magical coves and picturesque spots for adventurers or those looking to explore the island from top to bottom.
