Chios
The island of mastic
If you’re looking for an unprecedented experience in the Greek islands, then Chios should be at the top of your list.
If you want to feel it, to understand the atmosphere on the island you should go there!
Chios is a diverse island in the northeast of the Aegean, the fifth largest in size in Greece, and only a short distance from the coast of Asia Minor.
Its rolling hillsides are covered with olive groves, vineyards and mastic plantations which made the island wealthy during the Ottoman era.
Chios is famous for its medieval architecture, built during the domination of the Genoese from the 13th to 1566 which gives it a particular charm, with the narrow streets of medieval villages, the walls of the alleys are embellished with a very rare decorative technique, consisting of gray drawings scraped on the white background. Throughout the island, there are traces of patrician residences and fortified towers.
Did you know that Chios – is the only place in the world, which produces mastic (a gum resin) which is used as a spice and flavoring, giving an excellent taste to every dessert?
Did you know that there was here Christopher Columbus? Is it true that in some villages on this island, some people have the same name and surname?
Did you know that here has died Saint Marcella? Her brief life is connected with Chios (who was born and lived in the village of Volissos), and on the day of her birthday, July 22 pilgrims gather from all over the island.
Did you know that on Chios you can plunge into the mysteries of the middle age, visiting the villages Anavatos, Avgonima and Mesta?
However, this magical flavoring from nature is not the only magic one can find on this magnificent, mountainous island.
